Introducing Linda Johnson

Kia ora koutou KAC whanau.

I’m looking forward to getting to know you all not just as your new Treasurer but as a member of your church family.
Over the years I have worked in a variety of bookkeeping and accounting roles, including with charities and private enterprises. I am a Chartered Accountant being admitted to the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand institute in 2019.
I was born in Wellington where I have always lived with my husband Peter, son Ian and dog Ivor. We love walking up into the hills of Karori or along the bush trails on the days when we aren’t watching Ian play his sport.

Sabbatical Leave

Please note that our Vicar,Rev Ian Cook will be away on sabbatical from Monday, 19th June for three months.  Sabbatical leave is an important time to reflect, learn and be renewed for priests.  Ian is visiting Australia and Europe during this period and will be taking part in learning communities, retreats and visiting various parishes in the United Kingdom.  In Ian’s absence, we have a number of people temporarily taking on particular roles. If in doubt about who to talk to about anything, please contact the office in the first instance.

UPDATE

.All systems are go once more, now that we have the building consent amendment granted!  The various trades that need to be coordinated are all scheduled for as soon as possible, with concrete being poured on the 8th June and the Asphalt on the 21st June (weather dependent!).  If these all happen on schedule we will definitely be open for business and have the staff based in the building by the end of June.  The lift installation is underway and will take another week to finish, and then the walkways and other pieces of external work can be completed.   We will need to defer our dedication and opening celebration until September (once Ian is back), however that does allow us to get all the café systems up and running smoothly before hosting this milestone!

In the photo you can see the new carpet being installed in the Kōwhai / Yellow room (previously the activity room / supper room) and it looks really great against the freshly painted walls.  Thanks again to the donor who made the carpet possible, and the volunteers who have worked so hard on the painting.   The front fence was taken down briefly to allow for work the pavement curbing so we got  a good photo of the full front of the building (Second photo)

The Collective

This week instead of playing football because of a technical issue, we will actually watch a movie. Bring a Dollar for Dinner and your favourite snack along!!

157th Anniversary of the Consecration of St Paul’s.

There will be a service of holy communion to celebrate the 157th anniversary of the consecration of St Paul’s. The service will be held at Old St Paul’s on Tuesday, 6th June at 12 pm. Please come and celebrate with us. There will be light refreshments following the Eucharist.

CURSILLO – KĀHUI

From Maree Foster:

We are pleased to advise that we have two Cursillo’s taking place this year, a men’s Cursillo in June and the woman’s Cursillo in Masterton.  Cursillo is a short course on ‘Christian Living’ but it is more than this.  This is a lay ministry run through the Anglica n Church.  We have two teams who have trained hard the past year and have put together some fantastic talks and testimonies to share throughout the weekend.  Cursillo is a time when we draw closer to the Lord in our relationship with him and a time to simply come and experience all that he has for us.  It is a time to be blessed with so many unexpected blessings throughout the weekend and to experience Christ’s love in action as well as fellowship with those around you.  Meals are all provided and you will have your own bedroom.  Cursillo is such a gift to us all.  If you would like to come and experience a Cursillo as a pilgrim our weekends are on:

Men’s M45 – 22-25 June 2023 – El Rancho, Waikanae
Woman’s W45 – 6-9 July 2023 – St Matthew’s Collegiate – Masterton

If you would like to attend, please click on the link and complete the application form: https://cursillo.org.nz/downloads/app_forms/cursillo_application_form_2017.pdf

We can arrange a sponsor for you and your sponsor will take you to and from your Cursillo weekend so you don’t need to worry about transport.  Once you have completed the application form, please scan and email this to: registrar@cursillo.org.nz  Applications close on Friday, 9 June for the men’s Cursillo and Friday, 30 June for woman’s Cursillo.”

40 Hour Famine

The World Vision 40 Challenge is going to this year from 16 to 18 June 2023. We are keen to have as many participants join this year, children and adults. We have set up an online page that you may join – see; https://my.worldvision.org.nz/ss/iOFNIY/karori-anglican-church

You may create your own fundraising page and link to the church’s main page. We have given our church a goal of $5000 – we got this. We have also been giving about 20 hard copy fundraising booklets that may be more suitable for those not yet on social media and who’d rather issue their receipts by hand. Please let Natalie know if you would like one on: nsshaw@gmail.com some will also be left out on the table during morning tea after church. This year World Vision is focussing on raising money for clean water in Malawi as every day 11 children under 5 die from diseases related to dirty water – that is around 800 children a day who die due to lack of clean water. We look forward to creative participation and possibly doing an event on the Saturday afternoon of the challenge. We look forward to your participation. Thanks.

Transitioning to Parish Giving

We are very grateful for all the donations towards Te Korōria and the property fund.  Going forward, money that is being donated regularly to Te Korōria will become part of our general giving donations, unless we hear from you that you specifically want this funding ringfenced towards Te Korōria. This enables Vestry and Finance committee to plan and manage our finances as effectively as possible, balancing our financial obligations (including the loan we have for completing Te Korōria) and our ministry needs (including salaries for Youth worker, Treasurer etc ) as we seek to increase the way we serve and strengthen our local community.

If you have increased your donations over the short term to contribute to Te Korōria, we ask you to prayerfully consider keeping up this level of overall giving to Karori Anglican to enable the ministries we believe God has called us all into to continue.

We will return to serving both elements at communion.

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything.’ Matt 5:13
